The New Batwoman 52

I love comics! And right now, I'm loving DC The New 52. Inspiration can come from different places and definitely different mediums of literature. Yes, I said literature. I am including comics in literature. And I know quite a few English majors and authors are laughing at me right now.

The new Batwoman comic I have no words. The artwork in this book is unbelievable! I'd buy this comic even if it didn't have a great character and storyline. (Which is does!) The art in this book alone makes it worth picking up. I'm already planning on getting some prints from it framed and mounted.

But, I digress. I have been inspired to draw and write with a renewed ferociousness. I love powerful writing and art. This comic has both. Now, this comic is not for younger people. I was surprised myself to see intimacy depicted on the pages of the comic between Batwoman and her current love interest Detective Saywer. It was very tastefully done so, it didn't throw me off. And just so you won't be caught by surprise, Batwoman is a lesbian and her new love interest of course is a woman.

I know it's nowhere as good as the art in the book but, I draw for fun and it helps me relax.

And the artwork is just as good or better on the inside of the book. I'll be buying a hardcover when it comes out. Batwoman is simply a work of art.

FIRST 2 CHAPTERS OF PERFECT BLOOD!

The first two chapters of A Perfect Blood are now up for reading! That means, we are getting very close to the release of Kim Harrison's next release. I've already read the first two chapters online and can't wait to read the rest.

I read ARC review and they said that this book is definitely worth reading. I'm in heaven about now. Kim's book is coming out and my favorite vampire is coming out in 3D! Selene is back in Underworld Awakening!

Batwoman #5 was all I thought it would be. I'm looking forward to the next release in this series. If you're a comic reader and you haven't picked this one up, you need too for the artwork alone!

DID I JUST WRITE THAT?

I am up at 4am working on my WIP. I definitely understand the needs for rewrites and rewrites after your rewrite. I am laughing at myself right now. Either my character knows magic or I've got some fixing to do. LOL Swords appearing and disappearing in the next scene and daggers doing the same.

Raven is good but, not that good. She's a little upset with me right now so, I'd better get back to it. She's my creation so, I know exactly what she's capable of.

The writing is still going. Slow, but still going. It's taking me a while to get back into the swing of things but, strangely enough, it is so relaxing to me once I get going. I should have been doing this while I was going through life changes.

Raven was starting to get a bit pissed with me. She was tired of just hanging out in my head. She informed me that "She has a life too you know?"

Well, I've got to go. Just dropping in for a quick update. I know how I feel when my fave authors drop off the scene for a while. It drives me crazy.

WRITING AGAIN

A PERFECT BLOOD KIM HARRISON'S NEW BOOK COVER!

OMG! Can you tell I'm excited?! Can you tell that Kim Harrison is my favorite author? Well she is. Can't wait to get my hands on this one. Think I'll head on over to Amazon and pre-order.

A PERFECT BLOOD is the 10th book in the Hollows series featuring Rachel Morgan - a ass kicking earth witch, Ivy her friend living vampire, roommate and business partner. - that will kick your ass if you mess with Rachel. Jenks - a wisecracking pixie. - that always has Rachel's back.

I love, love, love this series. I am already having withdrawal pain just thinking about the day Kim stops taking us into the Rachel's world. I have grown so attached to the characters.

At least Kim is giving us different looks from the Hollows. BLOOD WORK is Kim's first graphic novel and it's told from Ivy's POV. I love Ivy. Well, as much as you can love a character that exits only in a book. I love all the characters in the Hollows world. I hope Kim gives us at least 15 books but, I don't think that is in the plans. Sigh.

REVIEW: DEADLIER BY THE DOZEN

Deadlier By The Dozen is Marcia's Colette's latest release. And I say last release because Marcia is a prolific author. Her prior releases The Spider Inside Her and Bittersweet were also released this year. This is how I like my authors to roll. And I absolutely love the cover.

Deadlier By The Dozen is an adult Urban Fantasy. It is also book two in the Dark Encounters series. You won't find any werewolves or vampires in this one but, I promise my Urban Fantasy fans...you will not be disappointed.

From the beginning, this story is shot out of a gun putting the main character Mackenzie Lawson in emanate danger. I love Mackenzie's progression over the course of this book. She has to transition from everyday average citizen to kick ass if she is going to survive.

Marcia paints characters so real I have to peek out my door and down the hall to make sure one of them isn't standing in wait for me. I asked Marcia if she would mine if I did a review. She was fine with it. But, I know she is wondering where is it?

Well, when I read a story that I absolutely love, I have a little ritual I follow. First, I can't read anything else for a couple of days because if done right, the characters stick with me for a couple of days. I call it marinating on the story. That's what I had to do before putting up this review.

The pacing of DBTD was perfect for me. It's definitely a page turner. I read it in 2.5 days. I couldn't put it down. I picked it up and thought, I'm reading another fav author right now so, I'll just read a chapter then finish my other book. Nope. I couldn't stop reading. She hooked me from the first.

No offense intended but, you've got to be a pretty damn good writer to get me to stop reading Kelly Gay, one of my favorite writers. Wait, does that mean Marcia has moved up on the fav author list!

I promised I wouldn't give away the story so I have to talk in general terms. But, let's just say Mackenize turns out to be a bad ass.

If you want to add an awesome author to you TBR list, look no further. Marcia Colette delivers.

I really enjoyed this one too.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Marcia will jump back in to Alexa's world!

Last but not least, this is the first book I ever read by Marcia. It's a paranormal romance. I normally don't do romance but, Marcia mixed enough romance, urban fantasy and kick ass to keep me very happy:)

BLACKBEARD'S HOUSE

Took a day trip to visit my BFF in Morehead City. We kicked back for a couple of hours on the beach. My awesome BFF waiting until I was chest deep in the Atlantic before telling me she had just watched shark week and we were probally surrounded by sharks but, just couldn't see them.

Okay, after surviving a possible shark attack, we grabbed a bite to eat and headed to beaufort and my friends art studio/store THE BLUE DRAGONFLY.

We had a great time checking out the antique shops. One owner even grew a cute little garden in the walkway beside her shop.

We had to take a break from fun for a bit when my BFF's soon to be daughter-in-law backed into my car. After taking care of business it was on to Blackbeard's house.

We plan on going back and taking the night walking tour. Not as scary during the day, huh? We walked the graveyard that's suppose to have the grave of a man Blackbeard killed when he walked in on his wife dancing in front of him before he found out that was her brother.

The graveyard is a part of the ghost walk that includes Blackbeard's house. Well, that's all. Just a quick check in.

THE WORLD HAS LOST ONE OF THEIR LITERARY TITANS.

I am re posting this from BITTEN BY BOOKS. My heart is saddened. I never had the chance to meet Leslie but, as a successful African American Author, a New York Times best seller even, she meant the world to me. I loved her writing.

There aren't that many successful African American authors and this woman who was also a single mother, took the time to write me a letter. I didn't ask her anything. I just wanted her to know what an inspiration she was to me. She wrote me back. She didn't have too. The world has loss a great author and an awesome person. Love you Leslie. Rest in peace.

Today the writing world mourns the loss of Leslie Esdaile (L.A.) Banks, author of the Vampire Huntress and Crimson Moon series in the paranormal genre, as well as romance, thrillers, and motivational non-fiction. For the last several months Leslie had been battling adrenal cancer.

Leslie was known not just for her works which touched the lives of many readers, but also as someone who opened her heart and arms to new authors to welcome them to the fold.
One of Leslie’s proudest and most memorable moments was introducing President Obama at a Health care Reform rally in early March 2010.

All of us here at Bitten by Books hold Leslie’s family and friends in our thoughts during this difficult time.

LEUCROTA PRESS

I had suspected but, now have confirmed that Leucrota Press, the small publishing company that published my first short story is no more. From what I can glean from the Internet, it looks like they closed due to bankrupcy as the main reason.

I had hoped that Leucrota would be able to ride out the turbulent publishing industry after purchasing Arkham Tales and signing Shaun Jeffery's The Kult over for a movie deal.

I have to say that, it's a bit sad to see the company that published my first story taking me from aspiring writer to published author was not able to to hold it's own. Maybe like the Phoenix it may rise from the ashes.

SUMMER VACATION

Summer vacation has begun for my kids so, as any Mom knows...you must become the summer fun/tour guide for your children. Because inevitably if you ask what do you want to do, you will get, "I don't know." Shoulder shrug.

My first adventure for my babies was an epic fail. I planned a hiking trip that five minutes into the hike, we ran into Mr. snake. I wasn't scared because Mr. snake was getting his arse kicked by fire ants and slithering as fast as he could away and into the water.

Here he is on the wood bridge curled up on himself before he mad a run for the water.

The trip wasn't a complete bust. There was some beautiful scenery and I got a good feel for what it would be like to work and live in a national park. Which is good being that one of my characters is a park Ranger or junior park Ranger. Nice way to do research and enjoy the family too.

SLOW GOING

It's been a bit since I posted. The writing has been slow going lately. But, tonight I sat down and went through fifty plus pages and added 535 words to my WIP. I updated my nano meter which I hope over then next day or two will start to show some real progress.

I saw a video today with the Magical Words authors that they basically said, if you are a writer, then write. Worry about getting it perfect later. Just get the story down. I know that's the logical thing but, it's so hard not to edit as you go. It is for me anyway. I am going to work hard over the next couple of weeks. I am going to try to just write my story. Don't worry about getting it perfect the first time. That's what rewrites and edits are for.

Mother's day!!!

I had to work on Mother's day but, my babies gave me smell goods and two cards that I simply and absoutely love.

I brought myself a beautiful gerber dasiy and Jillian Michaels new book UNLIMITED. I am reading it now.

I have to tell you, I am loving this book. The woman is deep. I am having a hard time not reading straight through this book. It's that good. No offense intended but, I had no idea Jillian was this deep. She defenitely is not a one hit wonder.

I am surrounded by author awesomeness! My three favorite authors have books out at the same time! Right now I am reading PALE DEMON by Kim Harrison. Favorite author number one.

And I just got my hands on DARKNESS BECOMES HER by Kelly Keaton. Favorite author number two. It's a good thing my fav authors have books out at the same time because I tend to tear through them.

Favorite author number three, my author friend Marcia Colette has a new release, BITTERSWEET. I've read the first couple of chapters and the girl has skills!

Have mercy my awesome threesome! I can't give you my entire paycheck. I think between my fav authors new releases and several books on my shelves TBR, I've got my reading goodness covered until Kim's graphic novel BLOODWORK comes out in July to be followed by Charlie's latest adventures.

IT'S ALL KELLY GAY'S FAULT!

Okay, months ago I promised myself that I would not buy any new author's books or start any new series until I had made a substantial dent in my TBR pile. Well, a while back I won a signed copy of Kelly Gay's book BETTER PART OF DARKNESS. She sent that along with a couple of authors I hadn't read. One of them was Kat Richardson so, I read GREYWALKER. I loved it! So, I had to get POLTERGEIST which I am reading now.

This morning, I get Kelly's Newsletter in my e-mail. It's talking about her new YA, DARKNESS BECOMES HER.

I made the fatal mistake. I read the first chapter. Now I have it on order to be delivered Wed. Why Kelly, why do you write such damn good books! You know I can't resist. Please have mercy! I've already pre-ordered THE HOUR OF DUST AND ASHES. I don't know if my brain can continue to take such reading happiness.

WHY WE BUY THE BOOKS WE DO

I was patrolling my favorite blog haunts this morning and found this cover.

I love it! I have to buy this when it comes out. I have never read Diana Roland but, this is a no brainer for me. No pun intended. Authors are always wanting to know what makes a reader buy their book. I just answered that question for an author a few days ago. Why am I buying this book? First of all, the cover rocks. The second reason, the title MY LIFE AS A WHITE TRASH ZOMBIE. Come on, it does not get any better than that! Third reason, the blurb on the back cover. Fourth reason, Diana is a multi-pub author. Final reason, I'm a writer/author myself and I need to be well read. So there you have it.

GREYWALKER

Just finished reading GREYWALKER by Kat Richardson. I received the book from a Kelly Gay blog contest. My name was randomly drawn. I got some other cool stuff too. I just bounced back from Kelly's blog. I let her know that it's her fault I had to order book 2 in the GREYWALKER series - POLTERGEIST.

It seems I'm behind in this series. The books in order are:

I was lucky enough to find books three and four at my local bookstore. Which is no small feat considering four Borders stores are closing right here in NC. I contacted Kat Richardson because I couldn't find books one and two in hardcover. She informed me that the first two did not come out in hardcover. Oh the pain! I'm a nerdy book collector and it's driving me crazy having part of a series in mass market paperback and the rest in hardcover. ROC, can you say special order please.

I had to special order some of Laurell K Hamilton's books to complete my hardcover collection. Which by the way, all of my friends have been pushing me to stop collecting hardcovers and switch over to a kindle or a nook. No such luck people. I can not get over having the actual book in my hot little hand.

Without further distractions, here's my review. Well, first of all, GREYWALKER must be pretty good if I've already brought book three and four with POLTERGEIST on the way.

I loved the GREYWALKER idea. A living person that can enter and move through the grey where paranormal creatures live. Just that one idea alone makes for some very interesting possibilities. I found myself reading into wee hours of the morning scared to put GREYWALKER down. I didn't want to leave Harper hanging in a potential deadly situation. There are enough twists and turns, vampires and magic to keep the plot moving along nicely. There were a couple of times I had to re-read a couple of passages because they were a bit overwhelming with descriptions of the paranormal. but, over all I really enjoyed this one. Like I said. I'm set. I've got books 1, 3, 4 with book 2 on the way. I'd definitely recommend this to my friends.

DESIGNED TO SELL

I'm paying my writing dues. I'm taking the dreaded grammar workshop! I've signed up for a workshop hosted by the grammar divas. Like they said, most people equate taking a grammar class with a root canal.

So why am I torturing myself? Because I want my manuscript to shine like the Michael Jordan's bald head. I want to put the best possible manuscript I can send into the black hole that is called slush pile. And I don't want my editor/agent be moaning rookie mistakes. That's why I have a beta reader, crit partner, writing resource books, read book after book in my chosen genre and take class after class to hone my writing skills.

I sacrifice hours of sleep after working twelve or sixteen hour shifts in pursuit of writing perfection. Or close as I can get.

Okay, I just finished reading ONCE DEAD TWICE SHY. I definitely will be reading the follow-up EARLY TO DEATH EARLY TO RISE. Kim has done it again. I've been growing more and more worried with Kim's Hollows series drawing closer to an end. I am a major fan girl of the Rachel Morgan Hollows series that Kim created and was starting to go through withdrawal with it's end looming near.

But, after reading Kim's new YA, I feel my stress lessening. I'm hooked on Madison, Barnabas, the light and dark reapers. With Kim's other series ending, I was afraid that Kim's style might change and I might fall out of love with her writing. No worries. ONCE DEAD TWICE SHY wasn't a disappointment. It flows from beginning to end with Kim's unique voice and ability to cause you to totally fall in love with the characters. It's filled with the twists and turns that Kim Harrison readers have come to expect. All is not what it seems.

I'm amazed that Kim was able to pack as much punch in her YA that she does with her adult series. She is truly a wizard with a pen considering, the shorter length of about one hundred pages or so in a traditional length YA.

And characters that I thought for sure I'd end up hating, I felt sympathy for and ended up loving in the end. Characters I thought trustworthy, well like I said before, all isn't what it seems.

Reading about Madison may be enough to hold me over until Kim's next release, PALE DEMON. I am also looking forward to the graphic novel release July 2011. The graphic novel will be from Ivy's POV no less!!! The cover is smoking HOT! Makes me yearn for my silver and black Honda CBR I sold. (sigh)

QUICK WRITING UPDATE

This year I have promised myself that I would start submitting stories. RAVEN'S TRANSFORMATION was published Nov. 2009. Since then, I have not turned in one story. This week I'll be turning in another Urban Fantasy short story. I'm in the final stages of spit polishing it to a shine. I have two publishers in mind for submitting.

I've almost finished reading ONCE DEAD TWICE SHY by Kim Harrison and should have a reader's review up soon. And I just signed up for a online writing class to help improve my writing.

WHAT I'M READING.

Last night I started on my TBR pile. I am currently reading ONE DEAD TWICE SHY by Kim Harrison. This novel is Kim's foray into YA. Here's the blurb from the jacket.

Madison's prom was a killer-literally for some reason she's been targeted by a dark reaper-intent on getting rid of her, body and soul. But before the reaper could finish the job, Madison was able to snag his strange, glowing amulet and get away.

Now she's stuck on Earth-dead but not gone. Somehow the amulet gives her the illusion of a body, allowing her to toe the line between life and death. She still doesn't know why the dark reaper is after her, but she's not about to just sit around and let fate take its course.

GOALS REVISTED

Over the last week or so, I've been formulating a plan to reach my goals for this year. Number one goal is to complete my first draft of RAVEN'S REVENGE. I've set a word count goal that if adhered too, should put me finishing up the first draft around March.

I also have another story that I have already completed the first draft that I'll be picking up and revisiting this year. There are two short stories sitting on the back burner as well. One has been rewritten three times. One is in it's first draft.

How are things going so far. Slow but steady. It helps having small specific goals. How about you? How's the goals for 2011 going?

New Year means new goals. And for me that means new writing goals. On the advise of my crit partner, I've scaled back my writing goals to make them more realistic. Here they are:

1) Finish first draft of current WIP.

2) Rewrite short story I've been working on and submit it.

3) Join a professional writing group

4) Attend a writing convention this year.

5)Take at least 2 writing workshops (online due to time constraints)

There you have it. This writer/author's goals for the new year.

TIME TO WRITE

My last post referred to several fears authors must face down while continuing to write. The key words being continuing to write. With that in mind, I've embarked on a three day writing marathon. Last night, I was up past 2am putting words to paper. I took my own advise. The result hasn't produced an extraordinary amount of words on paper but, the words that did make it, I'm pleased with.

I blame part of the slow writing pace on having to stop to look at videos of fight scenes, analyzing them using them to pen a more realistic butt kicking for my MC. And my job as an author is to put my character through her paces. Pretty much, make her life a living hell Sorry Raven but, a author has to do what an author has to do.

The beginning of the story begins better and reads well. I made chapter one bleed but, I dare say I'm proud of what I've written over the last few days. Today will be day three of the marathon. I needed to kick my writing into high gear due to a self imposed deadline of completing my MS and having it ready for submission early 2011. Then, it's back to editing and rewriting another MS that is in draft stage one.

I'm taking a bit of advise from one of my favorite authors and writing like it's a job. As a matter of fact, I turned down a part-time job opportunity so I could treat my writing as a job.

I've read several authors that say, that writing a novel does not get any easier. Please Laurell Kim and Kelly (Laurell K. Hamilton, Kim Harrison and Kelly Gay - my top three favorite authors) please say it isn't so! Lie to me. Tell me that some part of this writing novel after novel starts to become second nature with lots of practice and hard work.

So, what do you think? Does the process of writing a novel get any easier with hard work and practice or will I always have points of banging head against desk?

I WRITE THEREFORE I AM

As a writer and fairly new author, I find myself in a place that I think most authors at some point find themselves. Wondering if they truly are suited and capable of being a writer. You know, do I have the write stuff. (LOL)

FEAR NUMBER ONE:

You're not really a writer/author just pretending to be one.

Tracy O Hara blogged about, the fear of being found out after she wrote her first novel and sold it to Harper Collins. I think she called it the fake author syndrome. She said that a lot of authors fear that the first story or novel was a fluke and that they will be found out that they are not really writers. I remember when I wrote my first story. It flowed out of me completely formed like water rushing down a raging river. I read it after finishing and said, "this is pretty good!" Immediately after, the doubts kicked it. I wonder if I'll ever be able to write a story like this again? Man, this is good. Did I really write this? My BFF is constantly telling me, Melissa you are a published author. How many people can say that? She's so good for my confidence.

Then came the comments.

"Honey, this is good. Did you you write this yourself? It's kind of dark though." It's suppose to be dark. It's dark Urban Fantasy. (Grumbling to self)

"I love it! Your openings always draw me in and make me want to read more. You've have a bit of cussing in here though. Maybe a bit too much. But, right here, I think she should cuss." (She's a killer, she doesn't make nice.)

FEAR NUMBER TWO

Maybe my stuff isn't good enough.

I wondered the same thing when I turned in my first story. Raven's Transformation would have never been published if I had not been pushed. Even if your stuff isn't good enough right now, that's what revisions and rewrites are for. That's why it's so important to have people you can trust to give you honest opinions on your work. When my first story was published, I had a beta reader and friends critiquing my writing. I took some of their suggestions and revised to tighten and improve my story. And, surprise surprise, a small press publisher thought it was good enough to put in their anthology.

FEAR NUMBER THREE

I'll never get an agent. The competition is tight.

Well, my friend Marcia Colette and my crit partner Talitha have both landed agents that now represent their work. Marcia recently sold her first YA novel which comes out in October. It's called THE SPIDER INSIDE HER. I don't believe that luck has the final say on whether you become a successful author or not. I'm a firm believer that hard work and not giving up and persistence has more to do with being an author than anything else. J K Rowling said her Harry Potter series was turned down at least eight times by publishers. Bet those publishers are wishing they had taken her manuscript now. Harry Potter has turned into a world wide phenomenon and made J K Rowling the first author billionaire.

These are some of the fears that authors and writers have to face. The only way to confront them is head on. You must write. Not only must you write but, you have to be brave and let others read your work and revise, reword and rewrite. The final step for any writer who wants to have their work published is to send it out into the world. You must submit your manuscript, short story or whatever it is that you write to agents, editors and publishers.

The publishing market like any other business is going through some tough economic times like any other business is right now as evidenced by decreased sales, major changes at the big publishing houses and shifting of major players. One thing that won't change is there are still and always will be opportunities for well written stories.

So, I continue to write not hoping but, waiting for my opportunity to sell my first book or land an agent.

Finally able to get back to writing. I finished the chapter I was working on and sent it to my crit partner. I also sent her one of her chapters back.

Tonight, I am going to sit down and write out an actual budget. Yep, more of life intruding on the wannabe novelist. But, figuring out a budget will help my writing in the long run. Especially if I want to do this as a living one day. Most writers have to live by one. Income can be far in between and sporadic. So, as a aspiring novelist, I know I've got to sit down a make a budget.

Even, multi-published authors need a budget. It could be a year or more from writing the book to actually seeing it in print. And depending on how well your book does will determine your royalties. That is, if you earn out of your advance.

Yep, being a writing means never really knowing how much your income is going to be. That's why I plan on holding on to the day job for quite a while.

Well, the chicken awaits. How about you? Do you have a budget? A written one that you try to follow. I've polled my friends and none of them do.

Curve Balls

Life has been throwing multiple curve balls my way. The result is that I haven't been able to sit butt in chair and write for having to take care of more pressing matters.

Well, finally today I was able to sit butt in chair and write. Yay for me! I also sent my crit partner chapter 4 of her WIP. I have a lot of writing to do today. I've promised my crit partner my next chapter, cooking dinner for the girls and picking one of them up from a field trip today as well as housework. It never ends.

I'm not complaining. I like being busy. If I'm not busy, I get bored pretty quick. It's a good thing I like to keep busy. It helps with late night writing spurts.

I've been compiling a potential agent list. One of the agents on my list absolutely stated she was tired of a particular paranormal creature. That so happens to be the paranormal creature that I am writing about. Guess I'll have to move said agent to the bottom of my submission list.

I've also been compiling a list of potential publishers. One of the publishers I was considering isn't accepting submissions at this time.

Well, let's end this post with some happy news. Not mine but, happy just the same. Kelly Gay just announced via her web/blog site that there will be a book 3 and 4 in the Charlie Madigan series.

NEW CRIT PARTNER

I finally have a crit partner. I just sent off the first chapter of the story I'm working on. I also sent the story out to my beta reader and one other trusted friend. I haven't heard anything back from any of them yet. I hadn't really expected too. I was suppose to send them the chapter last night but, I fell asleep while finishing up the chapter last night.

Yay for me! I met my first goal/deadline with my new crit partner. While chapter one is getting the once over, I'll start writing chapter two. I've already planned/outlined what I want to happen in chapter two and even a little further out in the story but, this evening and later tonight, I'll be doing edits on CURSED BLOOD. It's time to get those submissions going while I'm working on other projects.

I also have to find time to read DARKEST EDGE OF DAWN by Kelly Gay. I fell asleep reading it the other night. Kelly if you happen to see this post, it had nothing to do with how good your book is. Your writing is awesome. I was just that tired. You are one of my all time favorite authors!

FUELING UP FOR THE DAY!

First day of school for the girls. It's a busy day for them and me. First lots to do on the home front. You know, the real world taking priority over my writing work. I've told my friends and family that I'm ready to take the plunge and start submitting stories. Who me, nervous? (She types with trembling fingers.) Getting ready to submit means a lot of late nights editing, polishing, writing a detail synopsis and perfecting my all important agent snagging query letter. Still have to work the day job. (that's what's paying the bills.) I will admit, I've been procrastinating for fear of rejection. My super awesome friend Marcia has been encouraging, telling me to go for it. (Thank you Marcia.)

This new stage of my writing reminds me of my very first story submission. I was writing the manuscript (that I am now ready to start submitting) when I came up with the character Raven. I wanted to stop writing Cursed Blood and start writing Raven. My BFF 2 said no! Write a few notes and a short story then go back and finish Cursed Blood. BFF 1 had to practically twist my arm to get me to submit my story. I did and "Raven's Transformation" became my very first published work! Thank you BFF 1 and 2. I also have to send a thank you to Marcia for giving me the heads up on a potential publisher that was looking for short stories for their anthology Abaculus III. I really feel blessed. I had only writen and completed 2 short stories and only submitted twice before getting published for the first time.

L A BANKS HAS GONE GRAPHIC!

One of my favorite authors L A Banks, has gone graphic with her VHL (Vampire Huntress Legends) series. Can't wait to to get my hands on this one. Yes, I do comics and I've been waiting on this one for a while. The comic takes place after the The Thirteenth which is the 12th and last book in the VHL series. The graphic will introduce the children of the main characters from the series. I'm not going to get into the series, it's awesome but, deep. You have to read it for yourself. A couple of days ago Laurell K Hamilton mentioned L A on her blog and commented that she is the only one that she has read that has successfully combined urban fantasy and hip hop culture giving her series a majorly different twist.

Speaking of Laurell k, I collect the Anita Blake graphic novels. (Hardcover) I follow Laurell k Hamilton's blog and I thought for a minute last year we were going to see an Anita Blake movie but, something didn't sit right with Laurell and she backed out of the deal. She has been writing Anita for so many years, I guess it's hard to let go of your creation. And when you do, you want it done right!

Hopefully next year the third of my big three favorite authors will be going graphic. Kim Harrison's hollows series is in the works!

Very rarely do I come across a book that I feel connected to but, when I read the book "Wonder When You'll Miss Me" I felt like I was in the main character's shoes. It is so gracefully written that it went from the gang rape and attepted suicide of a 15 yearold girl to an upbeat trapeze artist. The writing was sort of like a trapeze act itself.It's both joy and agony that those words are so good, so dead-on target as Davis describes the pain of lonely adolescent life. If there's any comfort to be had in news of the author's cut-short life, it's that Wonder When You'll Miss Me is the kind of novel that will endure. Even though it's marketed as adult fiction, this is really the kind of story to be read by teens -- males and females alike -- going through that horrible, bumpy transition into adulthood.

Faith Duckle, the overweight girl who's assaulted under the bleachers during her school's Homecoming game, is a kind of Everyteen -- we've all had bits of Faith's loneliness and optimism-against-all-odds at one point in our lives. Davis hones in on Faith's troubled psyche so quickly and accurately that we immediately embrace the girl as an intimate friend. Faith is the kind of character who steps off the page in the first paragraph.

After the attack by the group of boys, described in stark but subtle terms (I stared at buckles and pockets. He pinched my nose so my mouth fell open. Then the terrible sound of zippers…), Faith tries to commit suicide, ends up in a mental hospital, and sheds 48 pounds before her release. She returns to school as a renewed Faith, but she is dogged by the presence of her former self, which manifests itself as Fat Girl.

While constantly stuffing her face with junk food, Fat Girl is a menacing, nagging ghost who dispenses advice like: "There are all kinds of anger. Some kinds are just more useful than others." She dogs Faith's shadow, insisting that the teen might be able to shed pounds, but she'll never lose the person she was. There were days when she was a comfort and days when she was a nightmare, Faith says. Eventually, she becomes more of a nightmare after she convinces Faith to revenge the rape.

The "character" of Fat Girl is a marvelous stroke on Davis' part because, honestly, we can never fully leave our selves back in teenhood. We may move on, but something always clings. Wonder When You'll Miss Me is all about the process of un-clinging the bad debris while coming to terms with the bits that can't be shaken loose.

In Faith's case, this means running away to join the circus (something Davis herself did for several months). She renames herself Annabelle and is taken on by the Fartlesworth Circus as it tours the Eastern seaboard. She begins by picking up trash around the midway, then works her way up to assisting with costumes, grooming the elephants and, eventually, practicing with the trapeze artists. Along the way, we watch as she grows from frightened, easily-manipulated girl to a self-confident, brave fighter willing to somersault through life without a net.

What am I excited about? I finally get to work on Raven's story. I started writing it in earnest about a week and a half ago. I don't know what it is about Raven that gets me excited but she does. I've been wanting to start her story for way over a year now but, I couldn't. I had to finish up some other projects first. I believe part of my training as a writer is to finish what I start.

Well, Raven has already kicked someone ass in the first few pages. It doesn't surprise me, she has been pacing in the back of my mind waiting to be let loose. She's been waiting every since I introduced her in "Raven's Transformation."

I'm going to take my time crafting Raven's story. I want to do her justice. She's been very understanding waiting for me to get to her and her story.

SWITCHING GEARS

Started working on the opening lines for the follow-up of "Raven's Transformation." Editing was starting to fry my brain. I like the opening but, it may change. For right now it feels good just getting the first few lines on paper (computer).

I was talking to my Mother on the phone the other day and she was shocked at the amount of work, real work that goes into producing a salable story. It's amazing to me how many people don't really see writing as work.

People who know I write, think you sit down pump a story in a week or two and send it in to be published. They see three steps.

Step 1 - write story
Step 2 - send story in
Step 3 - publish story

It's more like:
Step 1 - write first draft
Step 2 - write 2nd draft
Step 3 - write 3rd draft
Step 4 - self edit
Step 5 - Beta reader/crit group/partner
Step 6 - edit again
Step 7 - polish check for grammar
Step 8 - query agents
Step 9 - receive rejections
Step 10 - Edit using agents suggestions
Step 11 - send out manuscript again
Step 12 - wait
Step 13 Start all over again

Oh and the whole time the submission process is going on, you need to be working on your next best seller.

Not much going on here. Celebrated the 4th of July with the the kids. Helping my new adopted kitten King Leonidas get settled into his new surroundings. Finally got back on the internet after my daughter decided to re-wire my network while I was working a 12 hour shift. Hanging out with friends but, I've got 3 days off and it's time to get down to business. So, I'll leave you with a couple of recent pictures and take my leave.

CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR

Well, I've gotten a couple of critque's on my WIP. Most of it was stuff I know I needed to fix. I desepartely needed the input from other writers and not just beta readers. So, why am I so down? I knew some of my sentences were chunky and not smooth and it needed a lot of work before it was ready for submission.

Today, after doing the Mommy thing and taking the girls out for a bit of fun, I will be concentrating on edits and rewrites.

Query Letters

I am taking a break on editing and working on my query letter for Cursed Blood. I've written and re-written my query. Writing a brief information packed single page query that represents the heart and soul of your book...isn't easy. I want to convey the plot but, not give everything away.

A potential agent to represent my work is first of all, a reader. They want to be drawn into your characters, plot and the world you've created. I want my agent (when I get one) to be a fan of my writing. Ideally, she or he will be just as excited to read my work as I am when I'm creating it.

I like most writers have my list of dream agents. One day, I might just land one of them. (fingers crossed) I've already been advised by a couple of writer friends that landing an agent is no easy task. The publishing industry has become more selective.

That's why, I'm taking my time with my query. I'm just estatic that I'm at the point of actually needing to craft a query for my MS:)

I almost forgot! My friend Marcia Colette's book "Stripped" is now available in paperback! I've already ordered my copy:) I'll have to take Marcia out to lunch and get her to sign it when it comes in.

Yesterday was a very productive writing day. I'm deep into re-writes on my WIP. I feel good about it. It's not a finished product yet but, it's well on it's way. I've been inspired lately by my friend Marcia Colette. Her book STRIPPED is doing well and getting some awesome reviews.

I had to change the begining of chapter one a bit but, I like it better. More tension, quicker introduction of antagonist and deeper character development and the flow is smoother. As Terry Spear would call it, 3-D character development is in full swing!

Heading to BAM today to purchase a book on self editing after a couple of hours of rewrites. I want as polished a product as possible before I start the querying process. My beta reader is dying to get her hands on it also. I have someone in mind to critique the first ten pages or so.

UPDATE:

Chapter three re-written/tweaked and printed. Feeling like a real writer today:)

Just wanted to let all my friends and anyone else who cares know, that I have started back writing. I'm still planning on attending Concarolina's this summer and with the help of good friends and family, I'm still on my journey in the publishing industry.

I'm planning on taking my road dogs with me to Concarolina's. (My girls and my BFF) I am looking forward to the trip and hooking up with another friend at the Cons. I'm waiting for the Cons to post the writing activitives.

I have three writing projects in the works right now. I'm taking Kim Harrison's advice and Jenna Black's advice seriously.

Life has thrown me a curve ball. Didn't see it coming. Wasn't prepared for it. All I can do is pick myself up, dust myself off and and go on with my life. Yeah, it's that big. I've shared with my closest and they are offering their support.

I am greatful to my dear friends and family that are standing by me. I am greatful for health and the breath of life. I am thankful for so many things. So, to all my friends and family I say thank you so much for your support.

WRITING CONVENTIONS

Well, I've gotten June 4th, 5th and 6th approved off at my day job. That means I'm planning on attending my 2nd writing convention. The last convention I attended was Raven Con in Richmond Virginia. This year I'm planning on going to ConCarolinas in Charlotte NC. I'm super excited about going. I learned a lot at my last convention.

One of the things that I am most excited about with attending this writing convention is, I'm a published author this time around. I feel like, not only do I belong but, I'm making progress toward my goals. Not that I expect anyone there to know but, I will.

What's really cool is, one of the panelist Terry W. Ervin III is featured in Abaculus III. My short story, "Raven's Transformation" is in Abaculus III. So, I'll definitely try to attend his panel, as well as my friend Marcia's panels.

I've already talked my BFF into riding shotgun with me. I'm thrilled that she's coming but, nervous too. You see, my BFF is a Minister. I've tried to prepare her in for what she might see at the convention. Hopefully, she won't embarrass me too much.

I know what you're thinking, my best friend is a minister and I write Urban Fantasy; how in the world does that work? I don't know. But, we've been friends forever. About a year ago I talked her into reading one paragraph from a short story I was working on. She ended up reading the entire story. She said, " I don't read Urban Fantasy but, your story just drew me in." She's been reading my stories every since. Though she has mentioned that I should try my hand at Christain fiction.

I'm looking forward to seeing my friend Marcia Colette again. Met her in person for the first time at Raven Con. I hope she brings baby girl.

Well, after attending my first conference, I had a short story published. Here's hoping this one brings good news too!

REWRITES

The rewrites have begun!!! I'm working on my 2nd Draft of my novel length MS. I read a quote from Ernest Hemingway that said the first draft of anything is crap. It cracked me up but, yet how true.

The first draft is just the bare bones of the story put to paper. The 2nd helps to really form the story on the paper and in your own mind and the 3rd, 4th or 5th hopefully fully brings your baby to life. I think Rachel Vincent said she rewrote her book like, six times before she thought it was ready. Yeah, I'm not planning on turning my story over until I've rewritten ,edited and polished it to within an inch of it's life. I'm trying to get published...again. We wouldn't want to turn in anything but our best as my former teacher Terry Spear would say.

I am planning on starting the actual putting down the bare bones of "Raven's" story when I finish the 2nd rewriting of this one. I've already started with the basics of what I want to happen. Who is Raven? (Which I already have an idea because of my short story.) And I already know how the story is going to start. But, I'm not saying.

Surprisingly, "Tara" the main character of the story I'm working on now, is becoming more clear to me on this 2nd go round. I thought I knew her inside out but, she is surprising me with some of her feelings about another character.

I rewrote my practice query letter today. (With a few suggestions:) I'm kicking myself for leaving out some important stuff in the first one. Stuff that makes my story a bit unique. I think it's pretty good now but, I'm not above rewrites.

Book Lover's Dream

I told you in my last post that I found "Black Magic Sanction" by Kim Harrison at my local Wal-mart for eighteen dollars. I also wanted to share more of my bookwormness.

Kelly Gay (one of my new favorite authors!!!) Sent me a signed copy of "The Better Part of Darkness." If you love Urban Fantasy with a kick ass Herione, this book is for you. It was soooooooooooo good. I'll blog about it later in the week.

In the picture I have a few other books from Kelly and some bookmarks. "Flirt" by Laurell K Hamilton was purchased by me. Looks like I won't be heading to the book store anytime soon. With my own story in the works as well as a huge TBR pile, I'm set!

To my readers out there, what good books have you read lately. I'm reading "Black Magic Sanction" right now. Last book read before that "The Better Part of Darkness."

I GOT IT!

I should be working on re-writing my own book right now but, I just can't! Too excited to concentrate on writing. Why you ask? Because I just picked up Kim Harrison's "Black Magic Sanction." Whoooo Hooo!

I've already read the first seven chapters online thanks to Kim's publisher. I really didn't expect to pick it up today on its release. The local bookstore charges around twenty-six dollars for the in store books but like fifteen dollars on line. I was planning on ordering and having it delivered to my house for like eighteen.

Well, Wal-mart who gets most books two weeks after the release date, drum roll please...had Kim's books out on display early this morning! I could not believe it. They never get the books I want at the same time as the book stores do. And they were priced at eighteen dollars too! Needless to say, I snatched it up and put it in my little cart as fast as I could.

Sorry, didn't mean to go all saving a dollar and budget wise on you. Main thing is, I've got it! Now leave me alone. I've got some reading I mean ahhh, research to do.

HAPPENINGS

What's been happening? Well, I finished the first draft of my MS. On the advise of more experienced authors, I've put it aside for a week or so. I start my rewrite tomorrow. I've started plotting Raven's story. I'm really excited about this one. I'm using a different approach to this WIP. I'm trying to do most of the planning and research ahead of time.

I was able to participate in a live chat at Bitten by Books with Kim Harrison. That was awesome. I'm not just a writer, I'm a fan girl too. I love reading! Kim's publisher put up not three chapters of "White Witch Black Sanction" but, the first seven and I read every bit of it. Her new book comes out Tues Feb. 23rd on my day off. Yay! I picked up Laurell K Hamilton's new book "Flirt" and I'm reading that now. (Not that I don't have several books in the TBR pile.)

I finally sent off my short story to my Mother. (I know, shame on me. Bad daughter:( ) Anyway, she finally got to read "Raven's Transformation" and...she loved it. How cool is that?! She told me, which I already knew, that she doesn't read Urban Fastasy but, she really enjoyed Raven and will be looking forward to the novel. Guess I better get busy.

Last but not least, I won a signed copy of "The Better Part of Darkness" by Kelly Gay. After reading BPOD, Kelly is definitely on my automatic buy list. I absoultely loved her debut novel. She mixes a touch of scifi with Urban Fanstasy. Loved it! Thanks Kelly! I'll be passing on my unsigned copy to a friend.

Working/Writing Hard

Sorry I haven't posted recently. I'm finding, the closer my MS is coming to completion, the slower the writing is going. I'm down to the last two chapters in the story.

I'm also dying to start working on Raven's story. Friends and family who have read "Raven's Transformation" were thinking that the novel length story I've almost completed, was Raven's story. I have family and friends riding my back to get started on telling Raven's story like yesterday.

I guess I did leave my character hanging in a pretty shaky/scary predicament. (HEH,HEH,HEH) That's what I'm suppose to do, right?

I'm just happy that most people who have read my short story not only liked it but, wanted more. That's always encouraging.

Baxter and Marley

Here is a picture of Baxter (the large Lab) and Marley (resue Lab) hanging out in my house. I don't like it but, it's 12 degrees outside. My Baxter had been missing since Dec. 18th. He came home last week. I don't know where he was but, we are thankful to have handsome man back!

Last week, the girls went out to get on the bus and Mr. Baxter ran into the garage and into my kitchen. We all just stood there looking at him. Poor Baxter was shaking with excitement.

I told my BFF that I learned so many lessons from my handsome man. The most important was never give up. We had given up all hope of ever seeing Mr. Baxter. He had been gone for 1 month and 9 days but, Mr. Baxter didn't give up or forget. He stayed focused and made it back home to his family:)

Marley and Baxter get along great. Now we have handsome man and cute puppy. The girls are so excited:)

ABACULUS III

My extra copies of Abaculus III came in! Abaculus features my short story "Raven's Transformation." It's the first time I've been published! I received one author's copy but, wanted additional copies for my family and friends. Next year I hope to be holding a copy of not a published short story but, a copy of my first published book.

Abaculus III is published by Leucrota Press. Leucrota just purchased Arkham Tales. Arkham is a quarterly magazine "devoted to weird fiction: supernatural supense and adventure stories." Looks like another chance for more new writers to get published to me!

Leucrota also recent sold the movie rights to one of their current authors novels. Leucrota is a small independant publisher but, from the looks of it, with all their recent activity, they may be growing a little larger in the future.

I'm still waking up at 4:30am and writing. I get up at the same time each morning, even on my days off from my day job. My friends think that's a little crazy. Maybe it is but, a writer got to do what a writer got to do.

Last week the new puppy slowed me down a bit but, I'm back up and writing in the wee hours of the morning again. Now that I'm a published author...I'm working hard at becoming a published novelist. My BFF who encouraged me to write Raven, says that not many people can say that they have been published at all so, I should continue to feel really good about that. And I do feel good about it. I'm just keeping my eye on the ultimate goal of having an entire book published. (Hopefully not just one. Fingers crossed.)

It looks like puppy is starting to settle into a routine of sleeping at my feet while I write, as long as I take him for a long walk during the day. He's lying behind me sleeping right now as I update the blog. Puppy's first couple of days here, he had to sit with his head in your lap or have you touch him in some way. Now after almost a week in his new home, he's starting to realize that we aren't taking him back to the shelter:)

It was really hard for me his first couple of days here because I couldn't write and help him get oriented to his new surroundings. He's lost interest in my laptop pretty quickly. Just walking by and looking at it from time to time as I type. I'm planning on getting another four pages or so before calling it a night so, I'd better get moving.

NEW HOUSEHOLD ADDITION

No it's not a baby. It's a four month old puppy that we resued from the pound. His name is Marley. Having a puppy a round had temporaily put a damper on my writing but, this morning...Marley is sitting at my feet playing with his new toy as I write. Along with a new puppy, I've been working quite a bit at my day job. I'm hoping to get back on track this week.

I've never gotten a puppy from the pound before. I usually buy my dogs from a breeder. A couple of nurses that I work with had gotten puppies from the pound so, I thought I'd go by and check them out. I was surprised at how many pure breeds there were.

It seems, a lot of people are turning in their dogs due to the economic pinch. I coudn't take but one puppy home but, I promised myself to go back in the spring a get another. I can't save them all but, I can save/afford two puppies.

Marley is four months old and would have been put to sleep soon if my daughter and I hadn't picked him. We took him into the playroom at the shelter and he has the best temperment. I'll try to put up some pictures later this week.

There were some adorable lab/shepard puppies I would have loved to take home but, since I couldn't, I'm trying to convince one of my friends that she should.

Just got back from seeing the Avatar for the second time with my daugther. You see, today is her birthday and that's what she asked for...to see Avatar for the second time.

I really wasn't upsett. First of all, this is the first time I've seen a 3-D movie and second, it was a really great movie. It lasted for around two hours and forty minutes but, it's that good, you won't even mind.

I'm really big on speical effects and visual imagary so, you can imagine how blown away I was. James Cameron took over four years trying to bring this film to the screen.

When he first conceived the movie, computer technology hadn't develped to the point he needed to make the movie so, he had to wait until it did.

There are a lot of critics that are labeling this film as racist. It does have some very strong racial themes. It also shows the greed of man . My older daughter said during the movie that it reminded her of the Pocohotas story.

The Na'vi reminded me of Africans or Native Americans. The movie did show how cruel and heartless people can be to each other but, it also portrayed the Na'vi as kind, thoughtful and intelligent people. It does have an old hollywood theme. I won't say that much because I don't want to spoil it for you. It's also, a beautifully written story that draws from America's shameful history with Native Americans and Africans.

I can't help but, draw lessons from his journey making this film and the film itself. The film cost something like 400 million to make, he didn't have the technology he needed, people were telling him he was crazy and that it wouldn't work, people wouldn't go see a sci-fi movie about ten feet tall blue people etc.

But guess what? They did! Now Avatar is only second in earnings to Titanic, which also just happens to be by who else? James Cameron. Avatar has already earned a billion dollars world wide.

So what did I take away from all this? Write what you want, write what you believe in, write what's in your heart and belive in yourself, even when everyone else is trying to tell you that you shouldn't.

From the film itself, it's a lesson in history. We all know what America did to aquire this land. It's no secret. It's also no secret how this country was built. It's also no secret that we still have a long way to go as evidenced by a recent senators comments regarding our President this week.

But, I tend to lean to the optimistic side. I think this film came out of James Cameron's heart. I for one was touched that he would want to tell this story and work so hard to bring it to life. I believe his intentions were to teach as well as entertain. A really good story is bound to start people talking. I'm pretty sure, that was his intention.

James Cameron went out on a limb. Are you willing too? I am.

Happy 2010 to everyone! I've made a few New Year resolutions. I'll keep them to myself. I've set some personal as well as writing goals for 2010. What about you?

I brought in the new year in my cozy little bed asleep beside my husband, my children were also sleeping when the New Year dawned. At 1201 the gunshots and fireworks woke me out of a deep sleep and I jumped out of the bed leaving my sleeping family. I ran into the kitchen and out on the porch thinking someone was trying to break - in my house...only to find new year revelers yelling and screaming watching the fireworks. So, still in my stupor, I dragged my to fast beating heart back to bed and dropped off to sleep.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year!

P.S. On the first day of the New Year, I brewed my coffee and sat down and started writing at 4:30am. (Sigh) At least I started my year off doing what I love to do:)

WRITING IS A LONELY OCCUPATION

Today I was talking to my BFF regarding a plot twist that I was considering with my WIP when I noticed a far away look in her eyes. She excused herself and got up from lunch and went to tell a total stranger something.

She came back and said continue but, I realized that as a writer/author just because you live and breathe your work, everybody else does not.

I so, need a crit partner or writing crit group. Anyway, the good news is, I'm still plugging away on "Cursed Blood." I'm still waking up at 4:30am and writing to ensure my writing time.

I just went over the 50,000 word mark. I remember when I didn't think I'd even reach 30,000 words and now I'm over half-way done!

I'm so excited because I'll actually have completed my first novel. Don't get me wrong, I know that I have several re-writes ahead of me. Rachel Vincent I believe said, she had 6 re-writes before she sold her first novel. It just feels good to finally have my baby on paper.

I'm also excited about starting my new WIP once I finish "Cursed Blood." I read recently that your WIP isn't finished until you've actually submitted and had it published. I really like that idea.

I've been inspired by quite a few writers and authors lately. Nike says just do it. My mantra is...just keep writing, just keep writing. They will read it.

STILL WRITING

Well, I've been working hard on novel length WIP "Cursed Blood." As a matter of fact, I've been getting up at either 4 or 4:30 am to ensure time for writing just encase work wipes me out and I'm too tired to write after.

After finishing it up I plan on starting on Raven's story, the character in my short story that's out now with Leucrota Press in Abaculus III.

I've already got some ideas of the direction I want to take Raven. She's turning out to be quite a complicated character/creature and I'm loving it! I work on her character sketch when my muse takes a nap on "Cursed Blood." I enjoy fleshing my characters out with words and pictures.

"Raven's Transformation"

My author's copy of my short story "Raven's Transformation" came today! It's published in an anthology called Abaculus III by Leucrota Press. It's the first story, the first anything I've had published so, you can imagine my excitement.

I can finally say, I'm a published author! It really doesn't seem real until you actually have the book in your hand and see your name on the page. That's what I kept saying to my friend Marcia. Even after the letter of congratulations from the publisher and and contract that I had to sign, I really didn't truly believe until I received the book in the mail today.

I love the cover! I'm an avid reader as well as author and I know how important a cool cover is. Cool covers attract your attention. They may not get you to purchase the book but, if they can get your attention then, at least your probably at least read the jacket and if it's good enough, you might purchase the book.

Well, now that "Raven's Transformation" has been published, it's time to work on getting "The Prodigal Demon" and "Cursed Blood" published.

PUBLISHING BUSINESS

I'm back from a short vacation. While I was away, I decided to take some advice offered by Marcia Colette at her blog and start learning about the publishing business itself.

I've already learned an important lesson, patience. Nothing happens with the speed of lighting. Last year I submitted my short story "Raven's Transformation" for publication in an anthology. It was accepted but, it hasn't been released yet. Hopefully, Nov. 20th it will be released.

Back to learning about the publishing business, I picked up several writing journals and books on writing markets. The journals offer a lot of good advise for new writers like myself trying to establish a writing career.

I plan on going to more writer conventions in the future also. At Raven Con last year, it was a pleasant surprise to find that most writers/authors seem to really want to help up and coming writers. It was also cool that I got to see Marcia leading a panel.

I hope by learning as much as I can about the business itself, I'll be able to better present myself as a serious writer and avoid some mistakes I may have otherwise made. I'll keep you posted!

VACATION

Yep, I'll be out of town and offline but, I'm packing my laptop and books to take with me. I'm taking a long anticipated mini-vacation:) I'm taking my girls and hitting the road. I'll have to blog at you later.

KIM HARRISON'S UPCOMING RELEASE

Yep, I'm a fan-girl. I may be an aspiring author but, I'm also a fan-girl. I can't wait to get my hands on Kim Harrison's new Hollows series release, "Black Magic Sanction."

If I haven't mentioned it before, Kim was actually the person that inspired me to try my hand at writing. No, I don't know her. I've never even met her before. I only know her like most people, though her books, website and blog.

So, how did Kim inspire me to start writing? I read her books and absolutely fell in love with her characters, her style, her world building, pacing and not to mention her Delicious tension she was able to create.

Because of Ms. Harrison and some not so subtle prodding from a few close friends, my short story "Raven's Transformation" should be coming out this month. (Sigh)

So, I owe a big thank you to Ms. Harrison for being such an awesome writer and inspiration for aspiring writers like myself.

Pins and Needles

Pins and Needles, that's what I'm sitting on. I know that getting a short story published may not seem like a lot to some people but, it means a lot to me. I've never had anything published before. I was told by the publisher that my copy of the anthology would be arriving approximately mid-October. Well, it's October fifteenth and you know what that means, I'm looking for my author's copy to arrive anytime now.

I told a couple of my friends how nervous I was and they were like, Melissa, just chill out. They didn't change their minds or anything. It'll come in a few days or so.( I also had a friend who is a published author tell me the same.)

My friends are very sweet but, they aren't writers. They don't have any idea how important it is to an aspiring author to get that first story published and receive some positive reinforcement that their work is worth something and that someone actually might enjoy reading something I've written.

Don't get me wrong, I've gotten positive feedback from family and friends that have read my stories before submission but, you really don't know if you have potential talent until a professional says, "Hey we like your work and want to publish it."

Well, I'll keep writing until my copy arrives, then I'll take a day or two to celebrate. (I really won't believe it until I'm holding my author's copy in my own little hands. Sigh:)

MAGICAL WORDS

You may have noticed that I follow several blogs. Deadline Dames and Magical Words are two blogs that I read daily. Those two blogs are geared toward new writers and new authors. Both are full of really good information and advise.

As a new writer/author I often find myself in a quandary of self doubt. Is my writing good enough? Will anyone want to read it? Maybe I don't have what it takes to make it as a writer. Damne Lili has a great pep talk over on Deadline Dames. It's just what the doctor ordered if you like most go through periods of self doubt. There's another great post by a new author, Tracy O'Hara Feeling Like an Imposter In writer's Clothing.

I am working really hard meeting my deadline for completing my MS. Just added six more pages today. I've met my daily writing goal for today but, I have to work the for the next four days straight and probably won't have time to write but, two of the four so, I plan on taking a coffee break then getting back to writing.

I remember when I thought I'd never get to 30,000 words, now I've passed that. I also remember thinking that I would never get published and that all this writing was for me. (Well, I'm not published yet but, I should be hopefully come mid-November:)

Being an writer is not easy work. Once you get one piece of work accepted, you have immediately or should I say continuously produce. I've already got the next novel length book in mind for the next book after "Cursed Blood." I've already got a partial plot going for Raven, the character in my short story.(eight pages of type written notes on characters and plotting.)

I met my writing goals for 2009 already and have set new goals for 2010. Wish me lots of luck.

Today is really special day because today is my birthday and my friend Marcia Colette's book "Stripped" is released. After reading "Unstable Environment," I am definitely buying a copy of "Stripped."

My friend has turned into one of those author's that make me stop everything I'm working on at the time and read her book. Kim Harrison use to be the only other author that could do that.

Published Author!

Published Author! I just found out today that my short story "Raven's Transformation" is going to be published! It's still seems unreal. I imagine that it won't seem real until I'm holding my own hot little copy in my own hands.

I started this blog as my journey to publication. Now, it's my journey as a published author aspiring to become a novelist!

One of the goals I set as a writer was to become published by 2009. Now that I've reached that writing goal, I've got to set up new goals for this year and next year.

I want to say thank you to Marcia Colette for being so sweet and also for being supportive and such a great role model and inspiration for me.

Finding out that your writing is good enough for a publisher on the fourth of July...Priceless.

WRITING UPDATE

Wow, I hadn't realized that it's been so long since my last blog! I've been busy. I have a short story submission sitting at the publisher waiting to hear on that. I've rewritten "The Prodigal Demon." I'm really excited about that one. Even though it didn't place in a contest, I really like this story. I'll keep plugging away until it finds a home.

I'm almost finished my novel length MS, "Cursed Blood." I have plotted out several storyline/plots surrounding the characters in this MS, enough to be at least a six book series.

I've started plotting a second novel length MS featuring Raven, the character from "Raven's Transformation," the short story I sent to the publisher. I also plan on turning "Raven's Transformation" into a series.

RAVEN'S TRANSFORMATION

Sorry for the long post absence. I've been busy with my day job. I do have good news though. In my last post, I reference writing like you have a contract(No, I don't have a contract.)but, I'm writing like I have one.

I just sent my short story off to a publisher. I hope they except it but, even if they don't, just submitting brings me closer to publication.

I have to go in to work tonight so, I'm taking a break from writing for the rest of the day but, bright and early tomorrow it's back to the keyboard to work on rewriting The Prodigal Demon and finishing Cursed Blood.

WRITING LIKE YOU HAVE A CONTRACT

"Write like you have a contract." - Kim Harrison. Those are six words of advice that Kim gives to aspiring writers like myself and my friend and blog buddy Magaly. She also goes on to say that you have to write if you feel like it or not.

For aspiring authors like me, that's good advise. I have to admit that I haven't always followed it but, I have realized how important this advise really is.

It makes the difference in starting and finishing a project. It makes the difference in turning in your best work possible. It makes a difference in avoiding the deadline rush. It makes a difference in building your professionalism as a writer. It makes a difference in separating the ones who make in in the publishing world and those who don't.

Dedication, persistence and commitment to excellence and writing like you have a contract can only enhance your chances of becoming a published author/novelist.

What about you? Have you committed to writing like you have a contract? After a disappointing month writing wise, I have.

CON CAROLINAS

I know I've only been to one Con but, I can already see the value of attending Cons. There's another Con coming up, Con Carolinas. It will be May 29th to May 31st. I really wish I could go but, my new stovetop is arriving in a few minutes. (Priorites, Priorites)

Anyway, if you can, go check it out. Paranormal author Marcia Colette will be on the Urban Fantasy panel. I absoultely love her writing style. I was happy to met her in person at Raven Con. Don't tell her but, she's an inspiration to me.

RAVEN CON AND ROMATIC TIMES

I'm back home from Raven Con. I had a wonderful time. I got to meet Marcia Colette in person after blogging and e-mailing her back and forth. I sat in on her first panel Twice told tales. She didn't know she was moderating until she arrived at the Con. She did a great job. I got her to sign her book for me. Wish we had more time to talk but, I had my girls with me.

I was able to go to the Con on Friday and Sat. I mostly listened trying to learn as much as possible and, I did learn a lot. I think I prefer the smaller Con events over the large ones. I liked being in small conference rooms up close to some of your favorite authors and being able to have your questions answered personally.

It was so cool sitting in on the panel with David Coe and Missy Massey and thinking, that I follow their blog and advise on Magical Words.

The Raven Con Convention was very inspirational and encouraging.

Oh! The Romantic Times convention was this weekend and ...my friend Marie-Claude Bourque won! That means Ancient Whispers is going to be published. I am so happy for her. She has worked so hard for this. I'll be buying her book as soon as it hits the shelf. I've got to support my peeps.

Well, time to start working on the 3rd draft of Raven's Transformation.

CONTEST ENTRY

Well, I logged on to the internet after re-writing my short story for the 2nd time that I'm planning on submitting, and found out that my short story I entered for a contest didn't win.

I really didn't expect to win the first contest I've ever entered but, I was hoping to at least place.(Sigh) Not only am I disappointed at not placing but, I got no feed back from the contest. I didn't even get a form letter letting me know the winners had been announced.

Well, I'm certainly glad I did my re-write before I found out about the contest.

I've targeted two writing contest. The first contest is a Short-Story contest. The deadline for that one is May 30th. The other is a Starter Phrase. The deadline for that one is April 20th. I'm thinking about entering a third which the deadline is June 20th.

Along with all of this, I'm still planning on completing my MS by this summer and starting Melissa's Urban Fantasy site.

I figure, if I'm going to be a writer, then I've got to start acting like one. (Deadlines included)It's time to move writing up on the priority list.

I've also been debating on contacting a publisher directly as opposed to trying to land an agent. I haven't made my mind up on that one yet.

I'm hoping to hear something back in April regarding the short story I submitted called "The Prodigal Demon." I entered it in a short story contest back in Nov. The wait is killing me.

THE DARK WHISPER - NEW LOOK

I was looking at my blog site and noticed that it looks cool but, it's more about my favorite authors than self promotion and one day becoming a published author myself.

So, with that in mind, I'll be making some changes over the next few weeks to it's appearance to become more reflective of my pursuits in writing. Along with the changes to this site, I'll be launching Melissa's Urban Fantasy blog site which will feature short stories that introduce some of my characters from upcoming manuscripts.

Some short stories will be entered into contest while others will be turned into novellas as a way of introducing characters that will later be featured in novel length manuscripts. My friend and proofreader has my first short story in her hot little hands right now.

It's time to get serious about this writing thing.

Congrats to Marcia Colette on her two new writing contracts. (Happy Dance, Happy Dance)

EXHAUSTION

I'm pretty wiped out today. I worked the night shift with 2 hours sleep before and 2 hours sleep after. If I feel up to it, I'll play around with the character keeper free software I downloaded from the Magical Words blog site to the right of my blog.

Tonight, I'm just catching up on my rest. No writing today. Next month, I'm changing to days so, just a little longer to hold out.

Not much to blog about today so, I'll leave you with one of my drawings. Maybe one day I can turn my love of drawing and writing into a comic. Hmmmm?
